Tunes Du Jour Presents 1963

If you could travel back in time and turn on a car radio in 1963, what would you hear? It was a year poised on the brink of profound change, both culturally and musically. Listening to the pop charts from that year is like opening a time capsule of a specific American moment, one just before the British Invasion, led by The Beatles, would arrive on our shores in January 1964 and rearrange the entire landscape. Using a playlist of the year’s biggest hits, we can get a clear picture of the sounds that defined the last year of this particular pop era.

Two major sounds seemed to rule the airwaves, both born from a distinctly American, youthful energy. From the West Coast came the sun-drenched anthems of surf rock. The Beach Boys offered a national invitation with “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” while their friendly rivals Jan & Dean created the idyllic “Surf City.” This wasn’t just a vocal trend; the raw, driving energy of instrumental hits like The Surfaris’ “Wipe Out” and The Chantays’ “Pipeline” provided a visceral, drum-and-guitar-heavy soundtrack for a generation. Complementing this was the sound of the girl groups, often channeling teenage drama through the ambitious production of Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” on tracks like The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” and The Crystals’ “Da Doo Ron Ron.” From the defiant fun of Lesley Gore’s “It’s My Party” to the tough-girl stance of The Angels’ “My Boyfriend’s Back,” these songs were miniature soap operas set to a 4/4 beat.

At the same time, a different kind of sound was solidifying its place at the heart of American music, broadcasting from Detroit and other soul music hubs. Motown was hitting its stride, producing hits that were both commercially successful and artistically sophisticated. You could feel the undeniable energy of Martha Reeves & The Vandellas on “(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave” or get lost in the smooth, clever plea of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles’ “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me.” A teenage prodigy named Stevie Wonder even captured the explosive energy of his live performances on “Fingertips, Pts. 1 & 2.” It wasn’t just Motown, either. The soulful storytelling of groups like The Drifters on “Up on the Roof” and the raw, emotional performance of Garnet Mimms on “Cry Baby” showed the depth and variety within R&B and soul music.

Beyond these dominant movements, the Top 40 of 1963 was remarkably eclectic. The folk revival crashed onto the pop charts with Peter, Paul and Mary’s earnest version of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In The Wind,” introducing a new layer of social consciousness to mainstream radio. Unclassifiable artists with singular visions also found massive success. Roy Orbison’s haunting, operatic ballad “In Dreams” and Johnny Cash’s iconic, mariachi-inflected “Ring of Fire” were worlds unto themselves. The charts even made room for the wonderfully unexpected: Kyu Sakamoto’s “Sukiyaki,” a beautiful Japanese-language ballad that became a number-one hit, and “Dominique” by The Singing Nun, also a number-one hit, proved that a great melody could transcend any language barrier. And in a class all its own was the wonderfully raw and raucous “Louie, Louie” by The Kingsmen, a garage-rock precursor that parents hated and kids loved.

Looking back, the collection of hits from 1963 represents a high point for a certain kind of American-made pop music. It was a world of surf guitars, dramatic girl-group harmonies, sophisticated soul, and a surprising number of unique one-offs. Every song on the radio, from Andy Williams’ smooth crooning to the gritty simplicity of “Louie, Louie,” was part of the same popular conversation. It was a vibrant and diverse scene, but one operating on its own terms. It had no idea that four young men from Liverpool were about to board a plane, bringing with them a sound that would change the rules for everyone.

Your (Almost) Daily Playlist: 11-25-23

Born out of lyrics Percy Sledge improvised during a performance after his girlfriend left him, “When A Man Loves A Woman” went on to become a true classic. Sledge let his keyboard and bass players have the full writing credit. On Sledge’s first recording of the song, the horns were out of tune, so Sledge did another take. His record company accidentally released the first version as a single. I don’t think they regret that error.  

The late Percy Sledge was born on this date in 1940. His best-known song kicks off today’s playlist.

Your (Almost) Daily Playlist (2-9-20)

Today is the birthday of Carole King, one of the greatest songwriters of the pop era. Chances are you know songs she had a hand in writing: “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “So Far Away,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “One Fine Day,” “The Loco-motion,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” “Up on the Roof,” “It’s Too Late,” and “I’m Into Something Good” among them.

King isn’t the only rock era songwriter celebrating a birthday today. It is also the birthday of her contemporary Barry Mann, who is not the same person as Barry Manilow. As a performer, Mann had one hit – 1961’s “Who Put the Bomp (In the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp).” As a writer, he’s charted nearly 100 times in the US. His credits include “Here You Come Again,” “Bristol Stomp,” “Only in America,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” “Make Your Own Kind of Music,” “On Broadway,” and “Sometimes When We Touch,” many written with his wife, Cynthia Weil.

King and Mann feature in today’s playlist, as do others who share their birthday: The Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt, Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Holly Johnson, Barbara Lewis, and Major Harris. I also threw in some folks who had birthdays yesterday: Daft Punk’s Guy Manuel, England Dan, and James Dean.

Foo Fighters – “Learn to Fly”
Today is Foo Fighter Dave Grohl’s birthday. This is easily my favorite song from the group’s album There Is Nothing Left to Lose. Grohl said it’s one of his least favorites on the album. What does he know?

Kings of Leon – “Sex on Fire”
Today is the birthday of Kings of Leon’s lead singer Caleb Followill. About this song, Caleb’s brother and fellow bandmate Nathan said in an interview “Sex On Fire was just kind of a little lyric just to fill in to kill some time until we could actually write something that wasn’t about sex and fire.”

Foo Fighters – “Everlong”

This song is a poem written by New York City Stage Delicatessen worker Manny Rosen set to music.

Barbara Lewis – “Baby I’m Yours”
This song was written by Van McCoy, who hit #1 with his classic disco recording “The Hustle.”

Mary Wells – “Two Lovers”
This song was written by Smokey Robinson, who was inspired by a movie he was watching on television in which a woman had two lovers. Imagine the song we would have gotten had Smokey been watching The Thing With Two Heads.

Oasis – “Slide Away”
Oasis member Noel Gallagher, who write this song, says it contains his brother Liam’s best vocals ever.

Foo Fighters – “I’ll Stick Around”
This song’s music video was directed by Jerry Casale of Devo, who is coming up later on this playlist.

Dionne Warwick – “Promises, Promises”
Like most of Dionne Warwick’s sixties hits, this one was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

LL Cool J – “I’m That Type of Guy”
Today James Todd Smith turns 52 years old. He’s cool and the ladies love him, hence his rap moniker LL Cool J.

Run-D.M.C. – “Run’s House”
Run-D.M.C. sampled this in their final top 40 pop hit, “Down with the King.”

Clarence Carter – “Strokin”
Today is the 84th birthday of Clarence Carter Clarence Carter Clarence Carter Clarence Carter Ooh Shit Clarence Carter.

The Smashing Pumpkins – “Landslide”
In 1994, Smashing Pumpkins’ version of this Fleetwood Mac song hit #3 on the US Modern Rock chart, becoming the first version of this song to chart.

Arcade Fire – “The Suburbs”
The title track from the 2011 Album of the Year Grammy winner.

Jack Jones – “Wives and Lovers”
Another Grammy Award winner, this one for Best Vocal Performance, Male. As with the Dionne Warwick song earlier in this playlist, this was written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The lyrics, which may have already seemed backwards when they wrote it in 1963, come across as downright anachronistic today, telling women they need to stay attractive and attend to their husbands if they want them to remain faithful. Today is Jack Jones’ birthday.
